Environmental Foundation (Guarantee) Limited

The Environmental Foundation (Guarantee) Limited (EFL) was established in 1981 as a non-profit public interest law group, with a mission to conserve and enhance the natural environment of Sri Lanka. Since its initiation, EFL has been actively involved in protecting and conserving the environment through mediation, litigation, scientific investigations, research and projects.

EFL is looking for an experienced, dynamic, competent and committed attorney-at-law to lead the legal division of EFL in providing legal input required for litigation, investigations and projects. The successful candidate will effectively contribute to executing the legal division’s roadmap in fulfilling the vision of the organization.

Duty Station: Environmental Foundation (Guarantee) Limited, Colombo 05.

Contract period: One year (extendable on annual basis)

Commitment: 5 days per week or as required by work (full time)

Direct reporting line: CEO


Duties and responsibilities :

  • Overall in-charge of the Legal Division of EFL.
  • Manage the ongoing and pending legal work of EFL.
  • Represent EFL in the legal cases.
  • Appear as a legal counsel when and where necessary as decided by the
    EFL Board of Directors.
  • Maintaining the relevant documents and updating the management/Board
    on the progress of such legal cases.
  • Manage a team of lawyers, apprentices and legal interns.
  • Draft pleadings and other legal documents.
  • Liaising with senior counsels.
  • Liaising and coordination with the other divisions of EFL.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis.
  • Manage and coordinate projects of the Legal Division of EFL.
  • Provide advisory opinions on legal issues in support of other divisions of
  • Participate in the formulation of strategies for investigations.
  • Participate in investigations and site visits when necessary.
  • Provide legal advice to aggrieved parties.
  • Carry out legal and/or policy research.
  • Engage in deliberations of national committees and make
  • Represent EFL at meetings, workshops, forums as and when necessary.
  • Proposal writing and assist in fund raising.
  • Conduct legal education and awareness programs.
  • Liaise with legal counsels, develop and maintain a pool of counsels for
  • Liaise with all relevant governmental departments, agencies and other
    stakeholders on a regular basis.
  • Develop a network and resource base from public and private sectors,
    academia and non-governmental sector.
  • Execute any other work agreed upon with the management/Board.

Required Qualifications and Experience :

  • An Attorney-at-Law with at least 5 years’ experience.
  • Postgraduate qualification will be an advantage.
  • A good command of the English Language.
  • Experience in litigation, particularly in Writs and Fundamental Rights
  • Strong analytical, research and written communication skills.
  • A keen interest in environmental issues and public interest litigation.
  • Strong leadership skills and innovative problem-solving skills.
