Located in the buffer zone of the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, the Koskulana Mini Hydro Power Project has the capacity to generate up to 600kw of energy by harnessing the Koskulana River. Coming under the jurisdiction of the Kalawana Divisional Secretariat, the power plant is currently under construction. After initial investigations and a recent site visit, it can be confirmed that this project poses many environmental impacts, which include the loss of habitat for flora and fauna, soil erosion, river bank erosion and siltation in the river. Due to the negative impacts posed by the project, EFL is currently working with the relevant Government authorities to halt this project.
